The adventure begins!

We arrive at night in Istanbul’s new Asian-side airport just in time for a dramatic thunderstorm as we are driven the 50 km into town. The Asian side is now heavily built-up and the motorway in choked with lorries, presumably en route for Europe. The road is lined with shopping malls and high-rise buildings.

At the height of the storm, the blue piers of the Bosphorus suspension bridge come into sight and the ancient city reveals itself through the rain. Memories from 40 years ago stir. I drove across this bridge shortly after it opened in the mid 70s.

Our hotel is in a great location, overlooked by the Blue Mosque. We are itching to start exploring but it is nearly midnight local time. We will start tomorrow.
